Bear Flag Monument on the Plaza
That’s the Bear Flag monument, remembering the day in 1846 that a band of Americans captured Sonoma from Mexico and established the Bear Flag Republic.
Three women sewed the flag with a grizzly bear on it, a symbol of strength. They used the image of a grizzly bear because at that time, thousands of grizzlies lived in California. Now they are extinct. In 1911 the Bear Flag, became the California state flag.
